How To Pair Bluetooth Device With Windows 7

Bluetooth is a commonly used wireless technology for transferring data, between two compatible devices. You can pair any Bluetooth enabled device with Windows 7, such as your mobile phone, wireless headset, a Bluetooth enabled wireless printer, wireless keyboard/mouse, and so on.

Here are the steps to add a Bluetooth enabled device to your Windows 7 PC.

1. Enable Bluetooth on the device under consideration, that is make it ‘discoverable’ by turning on the feature from it’s settings. For instance, in this article, we have used a Sony Ericsson W580i mobile phone. For turning on Bluetooth in W580i, go to Menu –> Settings –> Connectivity –> Bluetooth.

2. In your Windows 7 PC, go to Control Panel –> Devices and Printers. Click ‘Add a device’ button on the top toolbar.

3. Windows 7 will automatically recognize and display all new devices, available via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or even the USB ports. Select your Bluetooth device, and click ‘Next’. In our case, Windows 7 automatically recognized our W580i mobile phone, and displayed it as a Bluetooth enabled device.-

4. The next step is the pairing of your PC with your Bluetooth device. Windows 7 gives a 8 digit code, that you should type in your device, to complete the pairing. Your Bluetooth device will notify you of your PC trying to connect with it, and also ask you to input the pairing code.

5. Once you are done with the entering of the code in your Bluetooth device, click ‘Next’ on the above window. If you take too long in entering the code, Windows 7 shows up a failure message. (Check out the Fix for bluetooth mobile pairing on slow Windows 7 PCs given by Microsoft). You can retry, by clicking on ‘Try Again’.

6. Once the pairing is successfully done, you should see the message “This device has been successfully added to this computer”. Click OK.

7. Your Bluetooth device is now added to the ‘Devices and Printers’ of Control Panel. Depending on the drivers installed on your PC, and also the capabilities of your Bluetooth device, you can do many things with this new connection. For instance W580i allows you to be used as a modem, as a remote control for your PC, by generating mouse movements & clicks. It also allows you to remotely control Windows Media Player.

That’s it. For unpairing the device, right click on it and select ‘Remove Device’.
