The iPhone Dev team has released Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta to jailbreak iOS 4.1 or iOS 4 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Their previous release, Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 supported iOS 4 only. Similar to the previous releases of redsn0w, this one tool uses the pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit. It does not include the SHAtter exploit found by pod2g.
Till now PwnageTool was available only for iPhone 3GS users to jailbreak iOS 4.1, iOS 4.2 and iOS 4.0.2. iPhone 3G users who earlier used redsn0w, but had to avoid it due to several issues including Cydia unfunctional, can now jailbreak their device using PwnageTool bundle.
For those of you with an iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2, you don’t have to downgrade iOS 4.2 to 4.0.x just to jailbreak your device. MSFT guy has released PwnageTool bundle which can jailbreak iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3GS (old bootrom). Similar to PwnageTool for iOS 4.1, this one preserves older baseband, so that you can later unlock it with Ultrasn0w.
iOS 4.2 does not yet have a jailbreak, similar to iOS 4.1. Also it brings a baseband update (2.10.04), which is currently not supported by Ultrasn0w. So we advise you to stay away from this update if you want to keep your jailbreak and unlock. Now for the rest of you guys who have already updated to iOS 4.2, here is how you can downgrade…

The latest firmware for iPhone, iOS 4.1 brings some super cool features including HDR photos, Game Center. However attractive it may be, do not upgrade to iOS 4.1 via iTunes update. This will upgrade your baseband to 2.10.04, and you will end up losing your unlock.
The latest firmware update for iPhone, iOS 4.1 features HDR photography, an uber cool feature that lets you take photos capturing a wide range of light on iPhone 4. When you enable the HDR(High Dynamic Range) setting, your iPhone camera app takes 3 pictures in quick succession with multiple exposures, and then finally overlaps them into one giving you a better photo.
