How To Create iPhone Ringtones In iTunes 10
Apple has recently released iTunes 10, with many newly added features such as the musical social networking ‘Ping’, TV show rentals at $0.99, wireless streaming with AirPlay and so on. Unfortunately iTunes 10 no longer supports the ‘Create your own ringtone’ feature, which was present in it’s predecessor iTunes 9.2.1.
Don’t worry, the old manual technique of creating iPhone ringtones still works and here is how you can do it.
1. First choose the song from which you want to create the ringtone . Play the song in iTunes or any other media player (there is no dearth here, VLC, Kantaris, GOM) and note down the start and stop times (of duration no longer than 30 seconds).
2. Right click on the song in iTunes and select ‘Get Info’.

3. Go to the Options tab, enter the Start and End times you just noted down and click OK.

4. Again right click on your song and select ‘Create AAC Version’.
5. iTunes will now save a different version of your song, this one of 30 seconds duration (as given by you in step 3).

6. Now you have your ringtone, but you need to do a bit of tweaking to make it play on your iPhone. Right click on the ringtone and select ‘Show in Windows Explorer’ to open it’s containing folder. Mac users, select ‘Show in Finder’ after right clicking.
7. Change file extension from .m4a to .m4r. Here is a step by step guide to changing file extensions, if required.
That’s it. You can now transfer this ringtone to your iPhone via iTunes. Delete the 30 second music file in iTunes, so that your iTunes library is not overcrowded. Check out iPhone Explorer, a freeware that lets you create iPhone ringtones, transfer files to and from your iDevice and even use it as a USB drive.
