Windows 7 Installation: Create Universal Disc With ei.cfg Removal Utility
Have you misplaced or lost your Windows 7 installation disc? A major problem in such scenarios is that you have to get a correct installation disc (specific edition) for your product key. For example, if you have a product key for Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, then you need a Home Premium Disc in order to install Windows 7. You can’t install Windows 7 from a disk of any other edition like Windows Vista which supports a universal disk.
The ei.cfg Removal Utility lets you overcome this problem by creating a universal installation ISO from your Windows 7 installation disc (belonging to any edition). It works by removing a small file (ei.cfg) which stores the edition information in the ISO image. Whenever you want to re-install Windows 7, you can use this universal disk (or create one from your colleague’s or friend’s disc) and choose the correct edition corresponding to your license key during installation.
Note that you need to use a Windows 7 ISO image of same kernel (32 bit or 64 bit) corresponding to your product key.
