Cydia For Mac OSX Will Use CydiaSubstrate, New Version Of MobileSubstrate

Saurik, the creator of Cydia for iDevices has recently announced that a Cydia for Mac OS X will soon be out. Considering an app store for Mac OS X that Apple is trying to pull off in 2011, Cydia for Mac makes a lot of sense. Now Saurik  has revealed that he has created CydiaSubstrate, which is a new version of MobileSubstrate.

For the unaware, MobileSubstrate is a framework that lies under Cydia tweaks and modifications, making app installs and modifications easy.

‘CydiaSubstrate’ will run on both iOS and Mac OS X and will enable developers to come up with apps that can modify your Mac OS X desktop similar to what we have been seeing on the iPhone. Here is what Jay Freeman a.k.a Saurik has to say about Cydia for Mac.

Just like you can make all these modifications on the iPhone, you can make these same modifications on the desktop. Until now, there has never been a way to easily install modifications to the system or third-party applications, as well as keep them updated.

Would this mean we will be able to customize our Mac desktop with themes similar to what we have been doing in Windows? To give us a glimpse of what we could expect in a Cydia store for Mac, Saurik has given a few examples.

For instance, users that have jailbroken iPhones would like to have a modified version of iTunes that does not ask to update iOS when the device is plugged in, since the update might overwrite jailbreak modifications, Or perhaps you want to change the frequency that TimeMachine performs backups to something other than the stock settings. CydiaSubstrate makes this possible in an easy way that average users could install and update them.

Well, the iTunes mod is definitely interesting for us all Let us wait and see if Cydia for Mac OS X could ultimately change the way we think about a Mac and lead to more and more opting for the Apple OS.
