How To Disable iPhone Location Tracking [Cydia App]

Ever since some security research has made a shocking revelation that iPhone secretly tracks location data including latitude and longitude coordinates and timestamp, every one who owns an iPhone has been feeling less secure about their privacy.

A secret file on your iPhone containing this location data in clear text gets synchronized to your PC or Mac whenever you use iTunes. So anyone with access to your iPhone or your personal computer can easily extract this information and use it to their advantage.

Seemingly this secret storing of location data has started with the iOS 4.0 firmware and until now it’s unclear as to why Apple would like to store this data but not use it by sending back to it’s servers. Maybe they like to use it locally for geo targeted advertising or some other new feature.

If you were to jailbreak your iPhone, then we have a smart Cydia app to disable this automatic recording of location and time information, thanks to Ryan Petrich. He is the same guy who earlier gave apps such as ProSwitcher and Display Recorder.

The app named untrackerd is available in BigBoss repository of Cydia. Search for untrackerd in Cydia and install this app. No new icons are added to your Homescreen.

The app installs a daemon that continuously runs in the background and keeps deleting the location history, which is stored in consolidated.db database file.

Here are some handy guides that will help you jailbreak your iPhone:

Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 4.3.2 with Sn0wbreeze 2.6 (Windows, Untethered)

Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 4.3.2 with PwnageTool Bundles (Mac OS X, Tethered)

Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 4.3.1 with PwnageTool 4.3 (Mac OS X, Untethered)

Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 4.3.1 with Sn0wbreeze 2.5 (Windows, Untethered)

How can I be sure data is deleted BEFORE it is sent to Apple? Does anybody know how often location data is sent to apple from your iphone?

Apple does not get any location data from your iPhone. It is only stored locally and transferred to your Computer when you sync it via iTunes.

Thank you so much! This app was found quickly in the cydia store and was the quick and easy fix that I was looking for. It works, and I feel way better about this scandal because of it. Thanks people at DSKzone
