Increase HTC EVO 4G MicroSD Card Speed From 5Mbps To 15Mbps

HTC EVO 4G MicroSD Card by default settings operate at a speed of 5Mbps. But an android developer learned that the device is working in a limited environment and it’s speed can be tweaked to as high as 15Mbps. That’s 3 times more than the default speed!

According to a XDA forum member, the speed can be achieved by changing a value in one of the system file in the android phone.

Before you head to change the settings, there are few things that needs to be done in your HTC EVO 4G device. The device should be rooted. If not, head to our article on how to root HTC EVO 4G. Then revert here.

Secondly, you need to have a Root file manager installed to explore and edit files in your phone. “Root Explorer” is a widely used application.

Once you have these things done, follow these steps:

1. Launch Root Explorer or any file manager and navigate to “/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/”.

2. Select the file “read_ahead_kb” and open it with a text editor.

3. Check the value and change it to 128. If it’s already 128, your device is already optimised for maximum SD Card speed performance.

4. Save the file and exit Root Explorer.

That’s it. Your HTC EVO 4G should now have a blazing speed of 15Mbps when you open files from gallery, etc. A good way of finding the difference in speed is to use any SD Card Speed Tester app in your phone.

A drawback of the above method is the value changes back to default value after reboot of phone. You need to edit the file after every reboot to have the increased speed. For a permanent solution, developing a flashable file will do the trick.
