Ever since iOS 5 has been out, iPhone and iPad users have been waiting for an untethered jailbreak that will set them free from Apple’s restrictions and give full access to the jailbreak App Store, Cydia.
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G/3G users have been fortunate enough to get a tethered as well as a semi tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 on their devices. iPad 2 users, however, are not so lucky. They don’t have a jailbreak for iOS 5 yet.
For those of you who were wondering what the iPhone Dev Team has been up to, here is a piece of interesting news. MucleNerd of the Dev Team has tweeted a couple of images showing a jailbroken iPhone 4S running on iOS 5.
He has confirmed that this same jailbreak will work on iPad 2 running on iOS 5. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done on this iPhone 4S, iPad 2 jailbreak and therefore, no ETA could be given at this point of time.
We are not aware of the nature of this jailbreak at this point in time; whether it is an untethered or a tethered one. It is, however, clear from MuscleNerd’s reply to a follower’s question, that the jailbreak is definitely based on a userland exploit as opposed to a bootrom exploit.
For the unaware, a userland or browser-based exploit is firmware dependent. This means that Apple can easily patch the exploit by releasing a firmware update. A bootrom exploit, on the other hand, is hardware dependent and a jailbreak based on it (for instance, Limera1n exploit found by Geohot) is a permanent one.
MuscleNerd has put up a quick video demonstration of the upcoming iOS 5 jailbreak for iPad 2. The video does not show much. First, It goes on to prove that the device under consideration is an iPad 2 by opening a magazine on NewsStand, an iOS 5 only feature. Later Cydia is shown running on this iPad 2, a clear indication that it is jailbroken.
If you observe closely, the above video shows the below Cydia screen with a faint view of the text ‘iPad 2 WiFi iOS 5.0 Cydia 1.1.1’ towards the bottom. See the screenshot below.
It’s going to take a while for this jailbreak to be out. Until then, iPad 2 users who like to jailbreak their device should stay put on iOS 4.3.3, for which an untethered jailbreak is available at JailbreakMe.com.
Stay tuned for more updates on iPhone and iPad jailbreak.
