How To Jailbreak 4.2.1 Untethered On iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, iPad Using Redsn0w 0.9.7b1
The iPhone Dev Team have released Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 for Mac OS X for untethered jailbreak of iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, and iPad. This ‘backup plan’ to have an untethered jailbreak is currently available only for Mac users, and requires iOS 4.2 Beta 3 IPSW as well as 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on Cydia for your iDevice.
Before you proceed with the jailbreak, there are some important things you need to know.
1. Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 1 works only for iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad.
2. Ultrasn0w unlockers are recommended to stay away, and wait for the final version.
3. Make sure Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH saved. You should see 4.2b3 on Cydia’s home screen on your iDevice.
4. Bluetooth is currently disabled.
Warning: This is a beta testing version of Redsn0w, so stay away if you care for unlock or have lots of data on your device without a backup.
Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, iPad iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Using Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 1
Here are the steps to untether your 4.2.1 jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, and iPad.
Follow our guides to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, or iPad using Redsn0w:
Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPhone 4
Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPod Touch 4G
Jailbreak iPad 4.2.1
You can also do a clean restore to iOS 4.2.1 IPSW (not Beta 3) and then jailbreak it with Redsn0w 0.9.7. In Step 5 below, select the option ‘Install Cydia’ along with the option ‘Jailbreak Monte’.
Those who already are jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1 using a previous version of Redsn0w can leave the option ‘Install Cydia’ unselected.
Step 1: For Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 1 to work, you require usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac. This requirement will be gone in the final version.
Download usbmuxd package and extract it’s contents.
Open Terminal on your Mac and cd to the ‘python-client’ directory of the extracted usbmuxd folder.
Type the following commands one after the other as shown in the screenshot below.
chmod +x tcrelay.py
./tcprelay.py –t 22:2222
You should see the message ‘Forwarding local port 2222 to remote port 22’.
Step 2: Run Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 and select iOS 4.2.1 IPSW for iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, or iPad. All download links at bottom.
Step 3: Let Redsn0w identify the IPSW. Click Next.
Sit patiently as this step may take quite a while.
Step 4: Redsn0w will now prepare jailbreak data by patching the kernel.
Step 5: In the next screen, select the option ‘Jailbreak Monte’ for untethered jailbreak. As soon as you check this option, you will be asked to browse and select iOS 4.2 Beta 3 IPSW for iPhone 4.
iOS 4.2 Beta 3 is currently available only for Apple registered developers, but a little bit of googling may help you find it on any of the content sharing sites.
Step 6. Click Next.
Step 7. You are asked to plug in your iPhone 4 and switch it off.
Step 8. Put your iPhone in DFU mode.
A. Hold down the POWER/SLEEP button for 3 seconds.
B. Without releasing the POWER button, also hold the HOME button for 10 seconds.
C. Without releasing the HOME button, release the POWER button. But KEEP holding the HOME button for another 15 seconds.
Step 9: Now sit patiently as Redsn0w jailbreaks your iPhone. It may take a while on the ‘Preparing Jailbreak Monte files’ screen.
When your iPhone 4 or iPad restarts you have a complete untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak, so no more plugging into your Computer to ‘boot into tethered option’ or tethered symptoms such as white Cydia icon or Safari crashes!
