Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 GM On iPod Touch 4G, 3G, 2G Using Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 2

iOS 4.2.1 GM was released earlier today by Apple, thus putting an end to iOS 4.2 release. This has been long anticipated by the jailbreak and unlock community, following the confirmation from the iPhone Dev Team that unlock for baseband 05.14.02 for iPhone 3GS, 3G will be released soon after iOS 4.2 is out.

We have already posted a guide to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G using Redsn0w 0.9.6b2. Now here is a step by step guide to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, and ipt 2G using Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 2, which is based on Limera1n exploitfound by Geohot.

Note: Cydia currently is not compatible with iOS 4.2.1. So you may have to manually install apps using SSH. Cydia for iOS 4.2.1 will be available when the firmware is publicly available.

1. Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 for Windows or Mac OS X, iOS 4.2.1 GM and iOS 4.1 IPSW for iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G. All download links at bottom.

2. First update your iPod Touch to iOS 4.2.1 GM downloaded in Step 1 via iTunes.

3. Launch Redsn0w and point it to iOS 4.1 IPSW for your iPod Touch.

After Redsn0w identifies the IPSW, click Next.

Note: You should point to iOS 4.1 (current firmware) and NOT iOS 4.2.1 FW. Otherwise you will get the error message saying ‘Unable to recognize specified IPSW’.

4. Let Redsn0w prepare jailbreak data by patching the kernel. After this is done, click Next to continue.

5. Select ‘Install Cydia’, ‘Battery Percentage’ (if you like) and click Next.

6. Next connect your iPod Touch to your Computer via USB cable and then turn it OFF.

7. Now it’s time to put your iPod Touch in DFU mode to let Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 inject the Limera1n exploit and jailbreak it.

A. First hold the POWER button for 2 seconds.

B. Keep holding the POWER button and press the HOME button. Do this for 10 seconds.

C. Next release the POWER button, but KEEP holding the HOME button for another 15 seconds.

Let Redsn0w upload ramdisk and complete the jailbreak process. While this happens, your iPod Touch will display the message ‘Downloading Jailbreak Data..’. If you get stuck at this message, then exit Redsn0w and reboot (press POWER + HOME buttons) your iPod Touch and start over again.

Sit patiently till your iPod Touch reboots to a fully jailbroken iOS 4.2.1.
