How To Jailbreak iOS 4.1 iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G With Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta

The recently released redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta can jailbreak iOS 4.1, iOS 4 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G. Similar to redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 and other previous releases, this one too uses the pwnagetool DFU mode exploit. It does not yet include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g.

Unlockers, Stay Away From Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta

Redsn0w 0.9.6b1 requires you to first update to iOS 4.1. iOS 4.1 brings a baseband update (2.10.04), which results in loss of unlock, as currently Ultrasn0w 1.1-1 does not support this baseband.

If you are feeling adventurous, then you may want to try out the unofficial PwnageTool bundle to jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 (Mac OSX only). This one preserves your baseband, so you don’t have to worry about losing unlock. Note that since this is unofficial jailbreak, proceed at your own risk.

How To Jailbreak iOS 4.1 iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G With Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta

Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta can jailbreak iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G only. As of now, it is available for download for Mac OSX (x86) users only, the Windows version needs some bug fixing. We will keep you posted when it releases.

iPod Touch 2G MC model users, your jailbreak will be tethered with redsn0w 0.9.6.

Here are the steps to jailbreak iOS 4.1 using redsn0w 0.9.6b1

1. Download iOS 4.1 or iOS 4 IPSW firmware for your device. Update your device to this firmware via iTunes. All download links at bottom.

2. Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your Computer

3. Launch redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta. Browse and select the iOS 4.1 or iOS 4 IPSW, to which you have updated in step 1.

4. In the next step, select ‘Install Cydia’ and all other options you want to install. These include Verbose boot, Custom boot logo, Custom recovery logo, Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage.

Click Next.

5. Next put your iPhone in DFU mode. For this, make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. It is not off, plug the device into the computer first. Then hold down the POWER button till you see the ‘Slide to Power Off’ screen. Then slide to power off.

Click Next.
