Limera1n Jailbreak For iOS 4.1 Released, GreenPois0n Delayed!

First of all, this was one of the most unexpected things to happen. We were all eagerly waiting for the new iOS 4.1 jailbreak Greenpois0n to be released by the Chronic Dev Team, which unfortunately was confirmed to work only with the 4G devices including iPhone 4G, iPod Touch 4G, Apple TV and iPad 3.2.2. Now out came an all device jailbreak, Limera1n from Geohot, the same guy who earlier gave us blackra1n.

The Chronic Dev Team isn’t too happy with this sudden release of an all device jailbreak by Geohot. They think the hacker stole the show with his new bootrom exploit, while they have been working on GreenPois0n for quite some time now releasing videos of iPod Touch 4G jailbreak and Apple TV 2G jailbreak using the tool.

Since Limera1n works for all devices unlike GreenPois0n which works only for the 4G devices, Geohot has asked Chronic Dev Team to implement his boot level exploit in GreenPois0n. Apparently Chronic Dev Team have decided to go with this option and have currently delayed the release of GreenPois0n. Here is what they have posted on their blog regarding GreenPois0n’s delay:

Thanks to the irresponsible antics of geohot, we will have to delay the release of greenpois0n (new ETA = as soon as possible), so that we have time to clean up his little mess and integrate the exploit he uses in limera1n into greenpois0n. This way, we can save SHAtter for future devices that may still be vulnerable to it.

We know that this is not what some people want to hear, but due to geohot needing to feed his ego (as usual) and revealing his limera1n exploit, we do not have any other responsible options.

So there you have it. SHAtter exploit is not going to be released, it would be reserved to jailbreak future devices just in case Apple patches up Limera1n. Now it’s up to you whether you want to wait for the release of GreenPois0n whose ETA is not yet known (but will be sometime soon), or go ahead with Limera1n which is already available for download for Windows users.

Limera1n can jailbreak iOS 4, iOS 4.1, iOS 4.2 and beyond (remember this is a bootrom exploit, which means only a new hardware release from Apple can fix it!) on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, and even Apple TV 2G.

Limera1n, which is currently still in Beta is an untethered jailbreak, and also hacktivates iPhone.

Note:

iTouch 2G is not supported as of now, but will soon be (until then you have redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta).

iOS beta versions are not supported.

Currently Limera1n is only available only for Windows. Mac OSX and Linux users will have to wait for their versions.

Limera1n does not support iPhone 3G, you can use redsn0w to jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.1.

Warning For iPhone Unlockers

Those of you want to preserve your unlock, do not upgrade to iOS 4.1 directly. Follow this guide to update to iOS 4.1 without losing your Ultrasn0w unlock (only for iPhone 4):

iPhone 3GS users: You could wait for PwnageTool to bring in the Limera1n exploit, so that you can jailbreak iPhone 3GS without baseband update.
