How To Root HTC EVO 4G And Flash Custom ROM
HTC phones are a rage, and many times before they have been rooted. This time, it’s HTC EVO 4G which got rooted, even before it hit the stores. A forum member of XDA Developers has given the guide to root HTC EVO 4G along with all the required file downloads. While the root allows you to flash custom ROMs, boot into a custom recovery, and write to system, boot and recovery partitions through recovery, it does not however allow you to write to system or recovery while on android. Also, you cannot flash a custom recovery by booting while holding down Vol key and powering on.

Attention: Do not download OTA update from Spring or use a RUU. Or else you will end up losing the root.
How To Root HTC Evo 4G
Here are the steps to root HTC EVO 4G:
1. Copy PC36IMG.zip to your sdcard root.
adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard
2. Power off your device. While holding down volume button power on the phone. Keep holding till you see the white bootloader screen.
3. Confirm by pressing YES when asked to flash the device.
4. Again confirm by pressing YES when asked to reboot your device after the flashing is done.
That’s it. When your phone reboots, you have a fully rooted HTC EVO.
Rename the image file on your sdcard:
adb shell mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/root-PC36IMG.zip
How To Flash Custom ROM In HTC EVO 4G [Flashing Recovery]
If you want to flash a custom ROM on your EVO, then you need to flash the recovery image.
1. Download evorecovery file and unzip it.
2. Plug in your phone to your PC and use the following shell command to boot it in recovery mode
adb reboot recovery
3. Windows users run the recovery-windows.bat file by double clicking on it from the freshly extracted zip file. Windows 7/Vista users should run the file as an administrator. On the other hand, linux users should run the recovery-linux.sh file. (Type ./recovery-linux.sh in shell and hit Enter.)
Now that rooting and recovery is done, you can go ahead and flash a custom ROM after wiping all your data and dalvic cache.
Download Stock ROM for EVO with root, superuser and debugging turned on. In any case you wish to return back to the stock build, then here is the original HTC EVO rom.
