Google has unveiled it’s plans to bring it’s web based applications now onto user’s PCs with Google Chrome OS. Google Chrome, a light and fast web browser is the base for this OS. The design is targeted to give PC users who spend more time on the web, an OS which would start as quickly as a browser and let them check their emails and browse without wasting their time on maintaining and configuring the hardware and software. As many of the tasks are done on the cloud by PC users with web based applications such as Google Docs, Zoho etc., web based OS could be the next big thing in computing.

Initially targeting netbooks, Google Chrome OS is an open source and lightweight operating system, especially designed for web users. The second half of 2010 will definitely see a lot of PCs equipped with this new OS. Given that Chrome OS would be available free of cost, Microsoft could be having have some tough competition, atleast in the Netbooks market, where Windows 7 is expected to make a profit.
Coming to the technicalities, Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. The kernel is from Linux and there would be a windowing system with simple user interface running Google Chrome. Google promises compatibility with all web based applications which comply with any standards based browser like IE 8, Firefox etc and not just for their own. This is a big sway away from the way applications are written for different platforms and sometimes ported between platforms presently. Writing an application which should conform only to web standards would definitely mean much flexibility and scalability.
